this is one of two species of coelacanth (pronounced see-la-canth)—the better well-known one, latimeria chalumnae. it has vivid blue colouration, weighs 176 lbs and can reach 6.5 feet in length. this species is critically endangered and was thought to be extinct until one was caught in 1938, giving it the status of ‘living fossil’ and lazarus taxon.

their braincases contain 98.5% fat and 1.5% actual brain matter. they have an intracranial joint that allows them to open their mouths extremely wide, and they have particularly large eyes adapted to see in the dim light of the seabed.
